The West Java Provincial Government (Pemprov Jabar) is undertaking a strategic initiative to reorganise public space in the heart of Bandung. The library that previously stood in the Gasibu Square area will be transformed into a digital library. This step is being taken to ensure that the public continues to have access to quality literacy services while the area undergoes comprehensive redevelopment.

West Java Regional Secretary Herman Suryatman asserted that this change in the library’s format is an adaptive solution. By switching to a digital system, literacy services will not be disrupted by the physical construction or the redevelopment of the Gedung Sate courtyard and Gasibu Square currently underway.

Although the physical infrastructure of the library at Gasibu is undergoing a change in function, the provincial government guarantees that the spirit of literacy will not fade. Herman Suryatman confirmed that the government’s commitment to human resource development through reading remains a top priority.

As a supporting measure during the transition and redevelopment, the provincial government has prepared two main strategies. “God willing, Gasibu Square will be integrated with the Gedung Sate courtyard and the public will continue to receive literacy services,” Herman Suryatman said in a statement on 14 July 2026.

The redevelopment of Gasibu Square is being carried out comprehensively, taking into account its function as a multifunctional public open space. Every day, the area serves as a hub of public activity, from sports and walking to family recreation.

Herman explained that the high level of outdoor activity requires a spacious, safe space that supports mobility. Therefore, the integration between the Gedung Sate courtyard and Gasibu Square is key to creating a high-quality public space in West Java. “These activities require a spacious, safe area with high mobility. Therefore, the redevelopment of Gasibu Square is being carried out comprehensively,” he stressed.

For residents who still prefer the atmosphere of a conventional physical library, the provincial government is directing them to use the nearest literacy facilities. One main reference is the Bandung City Public Library located at Jalan Seram Number 2, Bandung. The location of the Bandung City Public Library is very strategic as it is not far from the Gedung Sate and Gasibu Square area, so residents who are active in the city centre can still easily access physical book services.

This digital transformation is not merely a technical solution to land redevelopment, but part of a broader vision to strengthen the literacy ecosystem in West Java. The provincial government believes that high-quality public spaces must go hand in hand with easy access to knowledge. “The spirit of literacy will remain an important part of human resource development in West Java,” Herman concluded. Through collaboration between digital infrastructure and physical spatial planning, it is hoped that the people of West Java can enjoy public facilities that are more modern, comfortable, and remain educational.
