Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid has stressed the importance of controlling children’s use of digital spaces to prevent real risks such as scams and exposure to harmful content. “If five hours are spent on screens, when is the time for learning and achieving?” said Meutya to students during the KUPAS (Kumpul TUNAS) event at SMPN 1 Jakarta on Thursday. She explained that through Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP TUNAS), the government is implementing firm steps to protect children in the digital realm. According to her, this situation disrupts children’s learning focus and character development. “Younger siblings must reduce their screen time; this is for everyone’s future. It’s time for you to be busy seeking achievements, joining organisations, participating in sports, and socialising with friends and teachers,” stated Meutya. Meutya emphasised that these experiences represent the real threats facing children in the current digital space. Indonesia faces serious challenges, including high rates of online-based sexual violence, making child protection an urgent priority. “These cases are one of the main reasons the government is asking platforms to delay children’s access to create social media accounts until the age of 16. We hope you understand that the President, Komdigi, and the DPR will oversee the implementation of these rules for the good of the nation’s future generations and youth,” she said. “We appreciate SMPN 1 Jakarta’s initiative because we indeed hope that children can focus during school, enjoy time with friends, rather than being engrossed with their phones,” added Meutya. The KUPAS event is part of the government’s efforts to build collective awareness about the importance of child protection in the digital space. Through collaboration between the government, schools, and families, it is hoped that Indonesian children can grow into a smart, resilient generation ready to face future challenges.
