Digital SIM to Prevent Driver's Licence Fraud

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The Indonesian National Police’s Traffic Corps (Korlantas) is tightening checks on the validity of driving documents on roads, following a surge in counterfeit driver’s licences (SIM) circulating among the public. This phenomenon is cited as a key factor behind rising traffic violations and accidents, as many drivers take to the roads without adequate knowledge or driving skills. To prevent and eradicate the circulation of illegal SIMs, the police are now relying on digital technology integration. Through Korlantas’ official app, the public can access digital SIMs whose authenticity is verified by the central system. The technology acts as an automatic filter. If a driver’s physical card is forged, the system will automatically reject it. “The digital SIM is the electronic version. All are connected to the Korlantas Police database,” said Wibowo. According to Wibowo, the integration of electronic physical cards and digital formats serves as the main defence against document forgery syndicates. Officers can now verify documents in real-time much more easily. “If it’s a fake SIM, it cannot connect. It cannot link to the police database,” he said. With this interconnected system, Korlantas Police urge the public not to be tempted by offers of instant SIM services without tests. Aside from being illegal, such actions risk harming oneself and other road users by bypassing legitimate safety standards.
