Digital Predators in Children's Playgrounds: The AI and Online Gaming Threat
In the current digital era, children’s playgrounds have transformed into an alternative reality. Through online gaming platforms, they build worlds and socialise, while artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a loyal assistant for schoolwork. Yet behind this convenience, these digital spaces have also become ideal attack vectors for cybercriminals. Threats such as cyberbullying, phishing lures via popular apps, and personal data harvesting through AI chatbots now haunt the younger generation.
In response, Southeast Asian governments are tightening regulations. Singapore, for instance, has introduced an Online Safety Code of Practice requiring major app stores like Apple App Store and Google Play Store to mitigate potential harms. Similar measures are being implemented in Indonesia and Malaysia through restrictions on children’s access to social media.
The presence of AI brings new privacy challenges. A single data breach in an AI system can grant cybercriminals access to repositories of sensitive information collected from user inputs. Even seemingly fun trends, such as AI-generated caricatures, can expose personal details like occupation and hobbies, which are then exploited for social engineering attacks. Recent data shows a significant spike in cyber threats targeting the online gaming sector, with criminals often posing as providers of cheats, mods, or exclusive skins to lure inexperienced young players.
Parents must understand that children are often not the final target, but rather an entry point into the family ecosystem. Shared device usage or access to parental credit cards for in-app purchases can turn a single attack into a larger financial loss for the entire household. Beyond data theft, cyberbullying remains a critical issue, as online anonymity often emboldens perpetrators. While many platforms have implemented AI-based moderation, active community reporting of harmful content remains the frontline defence in protecting children’s digital spaces.
To mitigate risks, practical steps such as avoiding interaction with bullies and reporting abusive behaviour are strongly recommended. Parental control solutions also play a vital role in restricting inappropriate content and managing screen time. Andrey Sidenko, lead web content analyst and children’s online safety expert at Kaspersky, stressed that technology alone is insufficient. ‘Open communication and trust between parents and children are essential. Restricting access without explanation often provokes risky curiosity,’ he said. Sidenko added that fostering digital literacy and encouraging children to share their online experiences are key to building resilience against cyber threats. Children’s digital safety requires a balanced approach of technological protection, platform responsibility, and strong family relationships to prevent digital playgrounds from becoming hunting grounds for criminals.
