Thus, decisions are no longer made based on estimates or experience alone, but on accurate and up-to-date data. According to a UNCTAD study, future ports will function not only as transport nodes but also as information nodes capable of coordinating various parties in the supply chain more efficiently. The success of several countries shows that digitalisation can significantly change the face of the port industry. One of the most frequently cited examples is the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. As the largest port in Europe, Rotterdam developed a digital twin concept, a digital replica of the entire port area that integrates ship data, infrastructure, weather, water depth, and sea current conditions into one integrated platform. This system allows operators to predict ship arrival times more accurately, optimise dock usage, and reduce waiting times at the port.
