Digital Gold is 'On Fire' Again
Trading in the physical gold market digitally on the Indonesia Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (ICDX) or Indonesia Derivatives and Commodity Exchange (BKDI) is claimed to be increasingly popular among the public. This is evident from the total transactions in the first quarter of 2026 amounting to 30,921,382 grams, a 246% growth compared to the same period in 2025, which reached 8,941,108 grams. As a note, digital physical gold market transactions on ICDX reached 56,595,115 grams throughout last year. According to ICDX Director Nursalam, the transaction growth in the first quarter indicates that digital physical gold trading on BKDI is increasingly favoured by the public. Nevertheless, he continues to urge the public to remain cautious of various digital gold trading offers on social media. “Looking at the trends in the first quarter of 2026, we are optimistic that transactions will grow positively until the end of the year,” he stated in Jakarta on Thursday, 16 April 2026. Meanwhile, the Head of the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti), Tirta Karma Senjaya, stated that since the digital physical gold trading ecosystem began operating in Indonesia, his agency has always ensured the existence of the physical gold being traded to protect the public. In this ecosystem, Bappebti as the regulator oversees the exchange as the trading venue, the Clearing House for guaranteeing and settling transactions, and the Depository Institution which functions to store the physical gold being traded, including Digital Physical Gold Traders and Intermediaries as organisers that facilitate or channel public transaction orders. “The hope is that this ecosystem will continue to grow and become an alternative choice for the public to invest,” Tirta explained. Regarding the digital physical gold market, Bappebti’s 2025 data indicates that the total number of investors in this ecosystem reached 18.7 million customers. In terms of age groups, young investors dominate with 36.3% in the 25–34 age range and 32.6% in the 18–24 age range. In terms of professional background, students/pupils dominate with 35.1%. In terms of transactions, 94.9% conduct transactions below 1 gram, and in terms of value, 92.6% conduct transactions with a value below Rp1 million.
