Digital Connectivity Must Drive Societal Growth, Says Minister Hafid
Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has stated that digital connectivity in Indonesia must now go beyond providing access to creating impactful growth within society across various aspects. “Connectivity must result in growth,” Meutya said in a statement confirmed on Thursday.
She made the remarks while speaking at the launch of the Indonesia Digital Infrastructure Roadmap 2026-2030, organised by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas in Jakarta on Wednesday (29/7). Meutya noted that the country is entering a new phase in its digital infrastructure development.
According to Meutya, the direction of national digital development aligns with three main principles guiding the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs: growth, connection, and security. Therefore, the development of digital infrastructure must be designed to provide tangible benefits to the public while simultaneously acting as a driver of national growth. Digital infrastructure also includes supporting components such as cloud, edge computing, computing capacity, regulation, and governance, all of which must be built within a single integrated national architecture.
“Its development must be planned within an integrated architecture,” she said. Meutya emphasised that the direction of digital infrastructure development is now shifting from merely expanding network coverage towards meaningful connectivity. “Development must shift from coverage to meaningful connectivity,” Meutya stated.
To achieve this goal, the government continues to develop connectivity networks, including mobile broadband, expanding fixed broadband through fibre optics and the Kampung Internet programme, and strengthening the Submarine Communication Cable System with a multiple international gateway concept. This strategy is part of an effort to maintain the resilience of the national digital infrastructure and reduce dependence on specific communication routes.
She argued that digital transformation must proceed with a safe and trusted principle so that the public can utilise technology with a sense of security. “Indonesia must be safeguarded, not just its people, but also its sovereignty,” Meutya asserted. Through the Indonesia Digital Infrastructure Roadmap 2026-2030, the government is ensuring that digital development does not stop at providing access but is directed towards creating a digital ecosystem that grows, connects, and is secure towards the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
