Yogyakarta Special Region Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X has reiterated the importance of coexisting amid diversity. Responding to social tensions involving the Front Jihad Islam (FJI) and the Good News Mission Church (GMS) in Glugo, Panggungharjo, Bantul, the Sultan stated that differences should not be a cause for conflict but are a divine decree.

In Sultan HB X’s view, racial, religious, and cultural diversity is part of God’s grand design for humanity. He emphasised that awareness of this is crucial to prevent any group from claiming absolute correctness and denying others’ existence.

‘Human beings have differences, but it’s essential to understand that Allah created us with different races, religions, and backgrounds,’ said Sultan HB X at the Kepatihan Complex in Yogyakarta, as reported on Friday, 29 May 2026.

The phrase ‘Differences Are Inevitable’ carries philosophical meaning that diversity is unavoidable. Thus, enforcing uniformity or unilateral claims of absolute truth are seen as misunderstandings of creation.

Sultan HB X highlighted that conflicts arising from differences often stem from lack of understanding and awareness. He urged continuous education on tolerance and diversity for the wider public.

The Yogyakarta Provincial Government expects all conflicts, including those in Sewon, Bantul, to be resolved through good communication and constructive dialogue. This is vital to ensure citizens’ right to worship is legally protected under applicable regulations.

Yogyakarta has long been known for its socially harmonious community. With the spirit of ‘Bhineka Tunggal Ika’ and local wisdom, any group friction is expected to be mitigated by understanding that differences are a treasure, not a threat.
