Diesel Fuel Price Hike: Full Tank for Fortuner & Pajero Sport Rp 1.9 Million?

JAKARTA – PT Pertamina (Persero) has recently adjusted the prices of non-subsidised fuels effective 18 April 2024. This increase is considered quite significant, particularly for high-quality diesel fuels such as Dexlite and Pertamina Dex. In the DKI Jakarta area and surrounding regions, Dexlite is now priced at Rp 23,600 per litre, while Pertamina Dex reaches Rp 23,900 per litre. Two of the most popular vehicles in the ladder-frame segment are the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Both require the use of high-quality diesel fuel to maintain optimal engine performance and controlled emissions. So, how much do owners of these two vehicles need to spend to fill their fuel tanks from empty to full? Based on official specifications, the latest Toyota Fortuner has a fuel tank capacity of 80 litres. Dexlite: 80 litres x Rp 23,600 = Rp 1,888,000. Previously, filling up with Pertamina Dex cost around Rp 1,160,000 (assuming the old price of Rp 14,500), so now Fortuner owners must prepare an additional Rp 750,000 each time they visit a petrol station for a full tank fill-up. Slightly different from its rival, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has a smaller tank capacity of 68 litres. Dexlite: 68 litres x Rp 23,600 = Rp 1,604,800. Pertamina Dex: 68 litres x Rp 23,900 = Rp 1,625,200. Although its tank capacity is not as large as the Fortuner’s, the figure above one and a half million Rupiah for a single full fill-up remains a considerable amount for Pajero Sport users to consider. It is important to remember that using diesel fuel with the appropriate cetane number (Cetane Number), such as Dexlite (CN 51) or Pertamina Dex (CN 53), is highly recommended to maintain the health of common rail components and injectors in modern diesel engines to prevent rapid damage or clogging.
