Did the Qurban Shariah Apply During Prophet Adam's Era?
In Islamic history, the ritual of qurban was legislated in the second year of the Hijri calendar during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Historically, the practice of qurban dates back to the era of Prophet Adam (AS), as mentioned in the Quran.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala states: ۞ ’Recite to them the true story of Adam’s two sons. When they presented their sacrifices, one was accepted and the other was not. [Qabil] said, “I will surely kill you.” [Habil] replied, “Allah only accepts from the righteous.” (Quran 5:27)
The practice of qurban was also carried out by Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala states: ‘When the boy reached an age where he could work with him, Ibrahim said, “O my son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you. What do you think?” He replied, “O my father, do as you are commanded; you will find me, if Allah wills, among the steadfast.” When they had both submitted and he laid his son down on his forehead to carry out Allah’s command, We called out to him, “O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, thus We reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was a clear trial. We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.’ (Quran 37:102-107)
In Arabic, qurban is known as al-Udh-hiyyah, which linguistically refers to the animal sacrificed on Eid al-Adha. According to Islamic jurists, al-Udh-hiyyah is defined as “an animal sacrificed to draw closer to Allah SWT from Eid al-Adha until the days of Tashriq (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah).”
Regarding the command for qurban, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala states: “So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice.” (Quran 108:2)
