TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The spokesperson of the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Budi Prasetyo, denied that a fire broke out at the agency’s Red and White Building in South Jakarta on Saturday, August 29, 2026. According to Budi, the thick smoke emanating from the building was the result of fumigation activities within the KPK building.

“There is no fire at the Red and White KPK building. We were fogging the building, and the smoke from the fogging was detected by firefighting equipment, which in turn triggered the release of the smoke,” Budi said in a written statement on Saturday.

According to Budi, the smoke came from the building’s protection system, which extinguishes sparks in electronic devices. Therefore, the smoke wafting from the Red and White Building was not caused by a fire, but rather by the building’s protection system.

“This incident occurred in the basement, specifically in the UPS battery room. The General Bureau Team is currently vacuuming the smoke and inspecting other areas to mitigate and prevent potential risks,” he said.

Firefighters were deployed to the scene, who received a phone call from the public about a fire at 11:25 a.m. Jakarta time. “The report was addressed in the KPK’s Red and White Building,” said an officer from the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service Command Center on Saturday.

The firefighting process began at 11:34 a.m., where officers worked to remove smoke from the battery room in basement 1 of the Red and White Building. “The fire has been put out. Officers continue the process of removing smoke from the basement,” he said.

According to firefighters, they deployed three fire trucks and 14 personnel to the scene. However, the chronology and cause of the fire remained unknown.
