Dichotomy and corruption

From Kompas

An editorial analysis on Metro TV aired on Oct. 10 commented
on the poor performance of the legislature. The legislators have
not fought for the people's interests, but instead they have been
preoccupied with taking care of their own interests. The problem
is that even highly sophisticated educational institutions are
not by themselves able to produce capable and intelligent human
resources.

The institutions are increasingly more orthodox in nature so
that the students lack the capacity to think logically, the
ability to have effective communication, and the talent to find
proper solutions to problems. Under such circumstances the
legislators' work should be discontinued.

It seems that this bad performance has affected all segments
of the nation's life: the legislature, Supreme Court, police,
prosecutors' office, judicial bodies, ministers, sub-districts
and villages as well as neighborhood administrations, including
individuals. Corruption and graft are rife in the above mentioned
areas. The comment of the former vice president Moh. Hatta was
accurate when he said that corruption has become a culture. And
it was earlier reported that Indonesia was listed as the sixth
most corrupt country in the world.

Those people whose salaries are unbelievably high are helpless
in eliminating poverty in this country. The theory that people
resort to corruption because their income is not sufficient is
invalid.
