Dharma Waisak Flame Sanctified at Mendut Temple in Magelang
The Dharma Waisak flame, sourced from Mrapen in Grobogan Regency, Central Java, has been enshrined at Mendut Temple in Magelang Regency ahead of its transfer to Borobudur Temple for the 2026 Vesak commemoration. On Friday in Magelang, Walubi General Secretary Monk Kamsai Sumana Mahathera stated that Buddhists view the Dharma Waisak flame as a symbol of wisdom’s light, capable of dispelling inner darkness such as hatred, emotions, and ignorance. He explained that the flame in Vesak tradition is not merely symbolic but represents life’s illumination towards peace and compassion among all beings. “The flame symbolises our tradition’s light. Light is peace; peace is wisdom to combat inner impurities, whether in darkness, hatred, or ignorance,” he said. According to him, the flame’s glow serves as a reminder for humans to live in harmony with love and compassion, transforming inner darkness into life’s radiance. During this year’s Vesak celebrations, Buddhists are permitted to perform circumambulation and meditation in the surrounding areas of Mendut Temple as the government undertakes restoration work inside the structure. He noted that water seepage inside the temple requires long-term attention and renovation to preserve the historical site. The Dharma flame will remain enshrined around Mendut Temple before being transported to Borobudur on 31 May 2026 as part of the national Vesak celebrations. Following the flame reception ceremony, Buddhists from various traditions under the Indonesian Buddhist Council (Walubi) will take turns in prayer. “The prayers focus on positive intentions, for happiness and well-being. The essence of Vesak is purifying the heart and mind,” he added.
