Dewi steps to first tee in Indonesian Ladies Amateur Open

JAKARTA (JP): Consistent play from the moment she stepped on
to the first tee yesterday gave Dewi Suhartati the day's best
score, 78, and the lead by two shots after the second round of
three in the Indonesian Ladies Amateur Open at Cikarang Golf and
Country Club near here.

Dewi, from Deli Golf Club, Medan, carded a 40 on the front
nine. This included three bogeys, a double bogey on the 8th plus
a birdie on the 3rd.

The five-handicapper, whose hometown hit the headlines around
the world last week because of the Garuda airplane accident in
which all 234 on board were killed, returned home with a 38,
consisting of three bogeys, one birdie and five pars.

Overnight leader Diana Soewandi was relegated to joint fifth
place with Neneng K, both on 161. Diana scored a fine even par 36
over the first nine holes. However, homeward bound she flooded
her score card with a 48 for an 84, a shadow of her first round
77.

Neneng, from PGB Bandung, recorded an 80 yesterday. Neneng,
who played for West Java in the last National Games, carded an 81
on the opening day of the annual championships on Wednesday
in which the players compete for the Srikandi Cup.

Two strokes behind the leader is Jane Supriadi from Pondok
Indah Golf & CC on 158 (80 78). Jane went out in 40 and returned
home in 38, which kept her in the second place she finished the
first day despite all the movement around her.

Elly Mulani who is playing under the banner of Jakarta Golf
Club, the host of the first Indonesian Ladies Open in 1978, is
placed third on 159 (77 82).

Elly hit a double bogey and a single bogey in the front nine
for a 39 and came in in 38, with a birdie on the 12th and three
bogeys.

Jakarta Golf Club has won the Srikandi Cup seven times since
1984, six years in a row from 1986 to 1991. Thailand took the
prestigious trophy in 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1985.

A field of 120 golfers teed off yesterday for the Kartini Cup
contested over 36 holes. Tuti Supardi from Pondok Indah Golf Club
