Development plans need adjustment

DILI, East Timor: Development plans for the province need to be adjusted due to the youngest territory's unique characteristics, the governor says.

Governor Abilio Jose Osorio Soares told The Jakarta Post last week that the central government's current approach is practically the same as the development plans implemented in the more advanced provinces in East Timor.

"I think the government should adjust their policy to the local cultures and people's abilities," the governor said.

The government of East Timor, which was integrated into Indonesia in 1976, is working hard to reconcile the differences between those who support integration and those who oppose it, he added.

"Although we have been part of Indonesia for almost 20 years, many people still have different perceptions of the integration," Abilio said. (yac)
