Development of Old Town Tram Still Under Study, Pramono Prioritises MRT Completion by 2029
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that plans for the development of a tram in the Old Town area, West Jakarta, are still in the study phase. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is currently prioritising the completion of the MRT project, targeted for completion in early 2029. “Regarding the Old Town tram, what the Deputy Governor mentioned certainly needs to be studied more deeply,” Pramono said at the Road Infrastructure Office in East Jakarta on Tuesday (14/4/2026). According to Pramono, the main focus now is to ensure that the MRT project connects to the Old Town area. “What we are currently working to complete is the MRT up to Old Town; hopefully, it will be finished in early 2029. Once that is done, the KRL will run, the MRT will run, and TransJabodetabek or TransJakarta to Old Town will run—I am confident that Old Town will become a new place that the public will visit,” he explained. In addition to the MRT, the DKI Provincial Government also plans to develop TransJakarta bus routes connecting Old Town with areas outside Jakarta. This transport integration is seen as key to increasing the attractiveness of the area. Pramono emphasised that with easily accessible transport, Old Town can become a flagship tourist destination. “In particular, we are preparing Old Town to attract tourism,” he said. The tram is designed not only as an icon but also as an environmentally friendly transport solution in the heritage area. Rano conveyed the plan at the Intimate Dialogue Old Town Update event at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (9/4/2026). He said the tram concept has been included in discussions by the revitalisation team, particularly to support Old Town as a low-emission area. “Indeed, one of the aims is to reduce emissions. We are discussing plans to build a tram within Old Town,” Rano stated.
