Development of National Car: Being Prepared Including Electric Sedan

JAKARTA – The government has once again given strong signals regarding the continuation of the national car (mobnas) project. The latest development indicates that it has entered the preparation stage, involving domestic industries.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that the project is currently being prepared by PT Pindad.

“The national car is being prepared by Pindad,” he said at NICE PIK 2, Jakarta, on Monday (20/4/2026).

Airlangga emphasised that the development process will not be done instantaneously. The government is opting for a phased approach, particularly in building production capacity.

“So with the zone in Karawang, of course, we will later see the target to gradually increase its capacity,” he said.

The choice of Karawang is not without reason. This area has long been the national automotive industry centre, deemed ready to support the mobnas production ecosystem moving forward.

“One of them is the electric sedan, of course there will be multi-products,” Airlangga stated.

The statement indicates that the mobnas will enter the electric vehicle segment, following global trends while supporting the direction of domestic electrification policies.
