Development and modernisation top agenda for Indonesia-China foreign ministers' meeting
Beijing (ANTARA) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono are scheduled to discuss development and modernisation strategies at the first China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.
“At the first China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, the two sides will focus on better synergy between development strategies, explore practical steps to deepen the China-Indonesia community with a shared future, and strengthen each country’s modernisation,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Sugiono will co-chair the first China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism in Jakarta on Friday (21/8).
Also scheduled is the Foreign and Defence Ministers’ Meeting, commonly known as the 2+2 Meeting, involving Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Sugiono as well as Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun.
“At the second China-Indonesia Foreign and Defence Ministers’ Meeting, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defence Minister Dong Jun will hold in-depth exchanges of views with the Indonesian side on political security, defence cooperation, and the international and regional situation,” Lin Jian added.
Lin Jian said China and Indonesia have made solid progress in building a China-Indonesia community with a shared future, and the “five pillars” cooperation has produced beneficial results.
“As the defining transformation of this century unfolds at an accelerating pace, it is very important for China and Indonesia, as fellow major developing countries and major countries of the Global South, to strengthen strategic communication, solidarity, and collaboration,” Lin Jian said.
The two meetings, Lin Jian added, fully demonstrate the strategic significance and high level of relations between China and Indonesia.
“China will work with Indonesia to follow the strategic direction of the two heads of state, ensure the success of both meetings, make coordinated efforts to advance cooperation in development and security, and move faster to build a China-Indonesia community with a shared future,” Lin Jian added.
According to Lin Jian, the success of the two meetings can bring more benefits to the people of China and Indonesia and make a greater contribution to peace and development in the region and beyond.
The Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (CSD) is a new bilateral mechanism at foreign minister level established during the Indonesian foreign minister’s working visit to Beijing, China, on 21 April 2025.
The CSD is intended to identify cooperation achievements and set future strategic priorities.
The first 2+2 Meeting between China and Indonesia was held on 21 April 2025 in Beijing.
At that inaugural meeting, China and Indonesia agreed to expand security cooperation dialogue and build a comprehensive and sustainable security relationship with five main pillars: economy, people-to-people relations, maritime affairs, politics, and security.
Indonesia and China agreed to enhance law enforcement cooperation, including mutual legal assistance, intelligence exchange, and operational coordination in tackling transnational crime, cybercrime, and extremism.
As part of efforts to build strategic trust, the two countries also agreed to establish a new bilateral consultation mechanism in the fields of disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control.
In the maritime sector, Indonesia and China agreed to increase cooperation, including by strengthening coordination between Bakamla and the China Coast Guard.
