Detainee shot dead

JAKARTA (JP): A man was shot dead by his police escort on
Wednesday night while trying to escape detention.

Saimin, known as Ompong, was apprehended by the police Tuesday
afternoon moments after he jumped into the Ciliwung River near
Jl. Hayam Wuruk in West Jakarta. Witnesses said Ompong sought
refuge in the murky river after allegedly grabbing a woman's gold
necklace in front of the Murah dan Baik supermarket.

Believing Ompong to be a repeat offender, police pressed him
to reveal the hideouts of his colleagues, police sources said
yesterday.

He was shot while reportedly trying to escape police custody.
