Detainee found dead in bathroom
JAKARTA (JP): A detainee at Makasar police subprecinct in East Jakarta was found dead in a jail bathroom on Friday, a police report said.
Dani Kuswardhani, 24, of Jl. Mangga Besar, Central Jakarta, was found by fellow prisoners hanging from a rope at 5:30 a.m., according to a report received by staff at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital's morgue in Central Jakarta.
Relatives who visited the morgue Saturday said they were shocked by Dani's strange wounds, which they said included the loss of his fingernails.
"I saw that his fingernails were all missing and he had bruises on his back. It looks like he was severely beaten," said Lilik Purwono, Dani's cousin.
Lilik said Dani had been missing for two weeks, after which time the family received news that he was being detained by the police. Dani's father visited him in jail a day before Dani was found dead.
"After the visit, he said Dani was fine but looked thinner," he said.
According to Lilik, the family thought Dani was missing until they were told he was being held for allegedly "hiding" a woman.
Lilik said the woman had gone out with Dani for a few weeks after Dani learned that his wife had been having an affair.
"I don't think Dani hid the woman, he only wanted to talk about his marital problems with his female friend from Bogor," he said.
Police told Dani's family that he had been arrested at his workplace in Harco electronic center in Glodok, West Jakarta, and had committed suicide in jail.
An East Jakarta detective, who viewed the body at the morgue, said Dani had been in custody for 20 days.
The detective, who refused to be identified, declined to provide further details.
"We can't say anything about this before a complete investigation has been held," he said.
The body has been sent to the morgue for a postmortem examination. (04)
