Theme and Significance of This Year’s Commemoration
The government has established the theme “Protecting the Nation’s Buds for State Sovereignty” for this year’s National Awakening Day. This theme was selected to convey values of spirit towards a strong future for Indonesia.
Historically, National Awakening Day refers to the founding of the Boedi Oetomo organisation in 1908. This moment is recorded as the starting point of national consciousness, when physical struggle transformed into intellectual and diplomatic struggle. The commemoration aims to foster a spirit of unity and nationalism, which is expected to drive a collective awakening of all elements of society in facing modern challenges.
Pilgrimage to Heroes’ Graves
In addition to the flag ceremony, the 2022 National Awakening Day commemorations will also include pilgrimages to Heroes’ Cemeteries (TMP) in various regions. These pilgrimages will take place immediately after the ceremony concludes. The Ministry of Communication and Digital will specifically conduct a pilgrimage at the Jakarta Heroes’ Cemetery. There are also special pilgrimage agendas to the grave of dr. Wahidin Soediro Hoesodo in Yogyakarta and the grave of Dr. Soetomo in Surabaya, coordinated by the respective local governments.
