Destry Damayanti to Undergo Fit and Proper Test for Bank Indonesia Governor Today
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Acting Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Destry Damayanti will undergo a fit and proper test today, Wednesday, 26 August 2026.
According to information received by CNBC Indonesia, Destry’s fit and proper test is scheduled to take place during a public hearing with the Bank Indonesia Governor candidate by House Commission XI at 10.00 WIB. Commission XI Chairman M. Misbakhun confirmed the schedule.
“We scheduled it in accordance with the results of the internal meeting,” he told CNBC Indonesia on Sunday (23/8/2026).
Destry is the sole candidate and possesses comprehensive experience, spanning academia, financial markets, banking, the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), and Bank Indonesia. So far, the market has responded positively to her candidacy.
Trimegah Sekuritas Indonesia Chief Economist Fakhrul Fulvian assessed that Destry Damayanti’s experience as Senior Deputy Governor, acting BI Governor, as well as her previous experience in financial markets and the LPS provide a strong foundation to address these challenges. Destry previously also underwent a fit and proper test for her second term as Senior Deputy Governor in 2024.
However, according to Fakhrul, the challenge of becoming BI Governor this time goes far beyond the ability to operate within the existing framework.
“In my view, Mrs Destry has very comprehensive experience. But the challenge for the next BI Governor is not merely running Bank Indonesia well. The challenge is preparing Bank Indonesia to face a world that we may not even be able to fully imagine today,” he said.
He assessed that the success of the next BI Governor will ultimately not be judged solely on a single interest rate cycle.
Fakhrul said the next BI Governor will inherit more than the BI Rate, the inflation target and foreign exchange reserves. He or she will inherit a system in which money, credit, assets, technology, fiscal policy and global markets are increasingly interconnected.
“The task is not to control everything, but to understand the interconnections, maintain the anchor, and ensure Indonesia still has room to chart its own course,” he said.
In addition to Destry, on the same day Commission XI will also conduct a fit and proper test for Senior Deputy Governor candidate Aida S. Budiman at 14.00 WIB.
The following day, Commission XI will continue with fit and proper tests for two Deputy Governor candidates, namely Solikin M. Juhro and Anwar Bashor. All four are central bank leadership candidates selected directly by the President and submitted to the DPR in a Presidential Letter.
