Destry confirms no recommendation yet for Perry Warjiyo's replacement

Acting Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Destry Damayanti has confirmed that the government has not yet submitted a recommendation for a candidate to replace Perry Warjiyo, who resigned from the post of BI Governor. “Not yet, not yet. We are simply following the applicable rules,” Destry said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday. Destry explained that the mechanism for filling the position of BI Governor is stipulated in the Bank Indonesia Law. If a governor resigns voluntarily, the selection process for a replacement will commence in accordance with the prevailing provisions. She said the stages begin with the nomination of a Board of Governors member who meets the requirements. Subsequently, the candidate will be selected and appointed by the president with the approval of the House of Representatives (DPR). “So everything is already in the Bank Indonesia Law. So those provisions will be followed,” she said. Destry added that her appointment as Acting Governor is also mandated by Law Number 23 of 1999 concerning Bank Indonesia, as amended several times, most recently through Law Number 4 of 2026 concerning the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector. According to the rules, the Senior Deputy Governor assumes the duties of the BI Governor if the governor is permanently unavailable, including due to resignation, until a definitive governor is appointed. “If the Governor is permanently unavailable, including resigning, then the Senior Deputy Governor will replace the role of the Governor as Acting Governor until the definitive process is initiated by the President,” Destry explained. Regarding the possibility of her running as a candidate for BI Governor, Destry declined to speculate. She emphasised that her current focus is solely on carrying out her duties as Acting Governor. “I am only carrying out my duties here as Acting Governor in accordance with the provisions of the law,” Destry said.
