Destroyed Since the 2018 Lombok Earthquake, This Primary School Building Has Yet to Be Repaired
The building of State Primary School (SDN) 2 Seruni Mumbul, Pringgabaya District, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), was damaged by the devastating earthquake in 2018. However, to this day the school building has still not been repaired.
Supratman Hadi, one of the teachers at SDN 2 Seruni Mumbul, revealed that the condition of the school building had already been concerning since 2015. When the earthquake struck Lombok in 2018, the building collapsed while students were studying.
“The walls had already been damaged since 2015. During the earthquake, the roof collapsed. Fortunately no students were hit; our students were terrified at the time,” said Supratman on Tuesday (11/8/2026).
According to detikBali’s observations, the condition of one of the rooms at the school has no roof and only building debris remains. There are also classrooms with holes and no ceiling, as well as small cracks in the walls.
According to Supratman, the most worrying conditions are in the classrooms for grades 4, 5 and 6. The ceilings in those classrooms appear to be rotting and the roofs are leaking.
“That is why when it rains, we take the initiative to anticipate it. We take the children out first and look for verandas that are still in good condition. We are afraid the ceiling might suddenly collapse,” he added.
The unconducive conditions caused by the unfit building have persisted for years, especially during the rainy season. According to Supratman, this situation makes students and teachers uneasy during the teaching and learning process.
“Because the condition is already severe. The children are also uncomfortable, especially when they have to study on the veranda,” he said.
The school has reported the condition to the East Lombok Education and Culture Office, including by submitting repair proposals and conveying the matter directly.
“A few months ago we tried to prepare a complete proposal with all the floor plans and drawings, and we delivered and submitted it to the Office,” said the Head of SDN 2 Seruni Mumbul, Haerudin.
The Secretary of the East Lombok Education and Culture Office (Dikbud), Lalu Bayan, said that schools must report damage conditions through the Basic Education Data (Dapodik) system in order to participate in repair programmes from the central government.
“If it has been proposed, just wait for a response from the centre. If in terms of damage the school is classified as a priority, the central verification team through universities will certainly go directly to the location to validate the data,” said Lalu Bayan.
He added that budget limitations mean the East Lombok Regency Government is unable to handle all schools that have suffered damage. According to him, the central government will prioritise schools with damage levels exceeding 50 percent.
“But not all of them can be handled now; perhaps next year,” explained Lalu Bayan.
