Despite Patrols Until the Early Hours, Rubbish Piles Up Next to Jurangmangu Station
SOUTH TANGERANG, KOMPAS.com — Officers claim to have conducted regular patrols to prevent illegal waste dumping around the Jurangmangu Station area in Ciputat, South Tangerang. However, piles of rubbish continue to grow and now form towering mounds on open land. Unpleasant smells and a shabby sight greet KRL Commuter Line users. Teguh (not his real name), a station officer, said the rubbish is suspected to have been dumped gradually by irresponsible parties, especially from late night until early morning. He mentioned that the station has actually been aware of this issue for a long time. Various prevention efforts have been made, from installing prohibition banners to regular patrols around the area. However, the lack of guarding outside the station area allows rubbish dumpers to act freely. “There is no guarding from external parties. We also focus on the station, so we only patrol occasionally,” Teguh said. Based on observations at the location, the rubbish piles are on open land right next to the station’s entry and exit access. The towering rubbish, dominated by household plastic waste, is only minimally fenced with makeshift asbestos zinc sheets. Although covered, the rubbish piles are still clearly visible from inside the station area. Under certain conditions, especially when it rains or the wind blows towards the pedestrian path, the foul smell from the rubbish piles can be detected, disturbing passenger comfort. “It’s quite disturbing because it’s tall too. When getting off the train, it’s quite bothersome,” said Nana when met by Kompas.com at the location on Monday. Nana added that the situation becomes very bad when the weather is unfavourable. “The smell is sometimes there, but not too pungent. But when it rains, especially when the train door stops nearby, the smell can be immediately noticeable,” she explained. She urged the relevant parties to promptly transport the rubbish to maintain public facility comfort. “I hope it gets cleaned up quickly. Because this is very close to the station, and many passengers pass through here,” Nana said.
