Despite Increasingly Sophisticated PCs, Why Do Gamers Remain Loyal to PlayStation and Xbox?

Amidst the growing sophistication of PC gaming, consoles such as PlayStation and Xbox still hold a special place for gamers.

But what exactly makes these gamers remain loyal to their consoles? Is it simply due to the performance of the devices? Or are there other, more compelling reasons?

A recent survey by market research firm Circana reveals an interesting shift in trends regarding the main motivations of gamers when choosing a console.

According to the results of the first quarter (Q1) 2026 survey, the answer to the question “Why do you play games on a console?” is still led by one classic reason.

As many as 41 percent of gamers surveyed answered: “There are games I want to play that are exclusive to a console.”

Although it is still the number one reason people buy a PS5 or Nintendo Switch 2, the appeal of exclusive games is apparently starting to fade.

Circana notes that this figure of 41 percent is actually down 8 percent compared to the same period last year.

Interestingly, the reason people play on consoles is not dominated by a single factor.

Senior Director and Industry Advisor for Video Games at Circana, Mat Piscatella, in a post on the Bluesky social media platform, emphasized that the data on exclusive games “is not the whole story.”

Piscatella highlighted the second most popular reason, which closely follows exclusive games, namely “my friends and family also play on the console.”

This is clearly reflected in the PlayStation ecosystem. Although Sony has a plethora of flagship games, the list of best-selling games on PS5 is dominated by third-party games.

This is strong evidence that many PS5 owners play on the platform simply because that is where their friends and family usually play together, not just for the sake of exclusive games.

In response to comments about the small gap between the first and second reasons, Piscatella confirmed this.

“This is why the debate about ‘how important are exclusive games’ has been going on for years. The real answer is that they are all equally important,” he concluded.
