JAKARTA – Illegal street parking continues to be widespread along Kebon Kacang Street 30, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, despite local authorities having conducted enforcement operations against unlicensed structures and unauthorised parking several days ago.

Dozens of motorcycles are lined up along approximately three metres on both sides of the road shoulder, just about 50 metres from the entrance to Plaza Indonesia via the Kebon Kacang Gate.

Based on observation on Tuesday 10 March 2026 in the afternoon, the illegal parking persists despite no warnings having been issued by the Civil Police Unit (Satpol PP) or officers from the Central Jakarta Transportation Sub-office.

According to Ali, a parking attendant, many of the parked vehicles belong to Plaza Indonesia employees. “Those who park here are employees working at the shopping mall. Well, because there’s a need for it, so parking on the roadside continues,” he said. The parking rate at the location is Rp5,000, applicable for the duration of the vehicle’s stay.

Regarding the enforcement operation against unlicensed structures and illegal parking conducted by the Central Jakarta Municipal Government, Ali stated he would attempt to adapt. “It comes down to the fact that there’s a need to park here, close to the mall,” he added.

Previously, Tanah Abang District Head Dwiarti Indriani Utami acknowledged that unauthorised parking attendants resisted the enforcement operation because they regarded the location as their income source for years. “This is also shock therapy for them, a surprise that they can no longer seek additional income,” said Dwiarti when met at the location.

“The Central Jakarta Transportation Sub-office will also conduct daily motorcycle towing operations,” she stated.

According to Dwiarti, the parking demand around Kebon Kacang Street 30 originates from various groups, including Plaza Indonesia visitors arriving by motorcycle, as well as residents visiting nearby food stalls, shops, and restaurants.

Meanwhile, visitors using cars generally park inside the mall.

“We visited Plaza Indonesia’s motorcycle parking facility and found it does have space at the back. They have prepared capacity for 750 motorcycles. And there are actually many parking spaces within the mall,” explained Dwiarti.

However, she added that certain individuals frequently obstruct and persuade motorcyclists to park on the roadside, despite available slots inside. “Because we checked the parking locations along Kebon Kacang Street 30 one by one yesterday, and there were still available spaces,” she noted.
