Despite Complaints, Purbaya Assures China's Trust in Indonesia Remains Intact
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has assured that the Chinese government’s trust in Indonesia remains intact, even though they have complaints regarding a number of Indonesian policies. This was conveyed after he held meetings with China’s Finance Minister Lan Fo’an, as well as representatives from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and investors. “The Chinese government greatly trusts and strongly supports us. The discussions with them were interesting, highly constructive, and demonstrated China’s trust, and our trust in the Chinese government is equally good,” Purbaya said in Beijing on Thursday evening, 18 June 2026. He noted that both countries are equally enthusiastic about strengthening their relationship to an even closer level. Nevertheless, they also raised questions about the actual conditions in Indonesia. “Of course, I could explain and assure them that there are no problems with the fundamental economic conditions,” he stated. Purbaya acknowledged that Chinese business actors have a number of complaints regarding several Indonesian government policies, which are considered to disrupt the smooth running of business for Chinese investors in Indonesia. “And that has already been answered by President Prabowo, and President Prabowo will improve the investment conditions so that the government and Chinese investors can do business fairly in Indonesia. So the President fully understands the obstacles to doing business in Indonesia and these are being addressed,” Purbaya said. He stressed that the government understands the problems and complaints raised by Chinese business actors and is currently improving conditions on the ground. “We actually already understand what the problems are and have made improvements, but as for the complaints that have not yet been resolved, they sent them to us. The President and I have followed up well. It is just that some matters require time to return to a level that makes things easier for some Chinese entrepreneurs, although most have been resolved quickly,” Purbaya explained. He also stated that the Indonesian government is open to entrepreneurs from any country investing more in Indonesia. “The more investment, the better for Indonesia. It just so happens that China is one major source of investment that we cannot ignore. But there are also the United States, Singapore, and others. So we are diversifying sources of investment and financing so that our economy can continue to grow rapidly without altering Indonesia’s principle of non-alignment,” he said.
