Designer Says Prabowo's Attire Can Be Developed with Indonesian Touches
Designer Ali Charisma stated that the formal suit worn by President Prabowo Subianto could be further developed with Indonesian touches. He noted that while a formal suit remains an appropriate choice for projecting a presidential and authoritative image, the design does not always have to follow classic Western formulas. “In my opinion, the time has come for Indonesian fashion to help build the visual identity of a national leader,” said the Advisory member of the Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC). He explained that Indonesia possesses extraordinary cultural richness that can be translated into modern tailoring patterns, whether through textile textures, very subtle motifs, construction details, or material choices. He cited the example of a double-breasted suit with a modern cut that could be given an aesthetic Indonesian touch without looking like traditional clothing.
Separately, Chairman of the Indonesian Fashion Entrepreneurs Association (APPMI) Jakarta, Dana Duriyatna, observed that the choice of earth-tone colours, such as grey, is often used to demonstrate closeness to the people and humility. He viewed the formal suit’s contemporary cut as a blend of modern international style with a local touch, conveying a message of Indonesia’s readiness to compete globally without losing its national identity. Dana also highlighted the Garuda pin complete with the red-and-white flag as a state identity that affirms an absolute commitment to the nation’s ideology. He noted that the pin’s placement on the left collar, close to the heart, symbolises deep nationalism and constitutional responsibility. Furthermore, Dana paid attention to the choice of tie, suggesting that the metallic or brighter blue tie worn by the President symbolises stability, trust, calm authority, and a modern vision in the psychology of international political attire. He added that the black kopiah carries a long historical root in secular and nationalist politics in Indonesia, far beyond mere religious symbolism.
