Design Competition for Yogyakarta Special Region Boundary Gates Opened, Sultan HB X to Serve as Judge
The DIY regional government is organising the 2026 Pre-Design Competition for Markers of the Yogyakarta Special Region Boundaries, with total prizes amounting to tens of millions of rupiah. Open to the public, the competition will be directly judged by the Governor of DIY, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X.
The competition seeks design ideas for gates or boundary markers. The pre-designs sought are to be implemented at two markers in the southern DIY corridor bordering Central Java.
First, for the boundary gate in Temon, Kulon Progo, or the western entrance area to DIY, addressing issues of national road safety, area utilities, and arrival imagery.
Then, the boundary in Karangwuni, Rongkop, Gunungkidul, or the eastern entrance area to DIY, characterised by unique natural landscapes and proximity to geopark sites,” explained Ditya Nanaryo Aji, Coordinator of Substantive Matters in the Public Relations Division of the General Bureau, Public Relations, and Protocol of the DIY Regional Secretariat, when contacted by detikJogja on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
There are five assessment categories in this competition, including concept and ideas, design and aesthetics, technical aspects and materials, implementability, and presentation composition.
The pre-designs from participants will be judged by a panel of judges from various backgrounds. Academic representative Ir Ikaputra, architect representative Erlangga Winoto, and cultural representative Ir Suyata. Along with honorary judge Governor of DIY Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X.
“The Governor will serve as the honorary judge, providing assessment or judging for the top five already selected by the other judging panel,” explained Ditya.
“Why the top five? Because the prizes will go to the top five, from second runner-up to first place. With the largest prize of Rp40 million for the first-place winner,” he continued.
The prize details are: first place Rp40 million and certificate, second place Rp20 million and certificate, third place Rp10 million and certificate, first runner-up Rp5 million and certificate, and second runner-up Rp5 million and certificate.
“Cash prizes will be disbursed through the BPD DIY Bank account,” Ditya concluded.

- General Participant Requirements
This competition is open to professional architects and all architecture students from universities throughout Indonesia
Participants may be individuals or groups with a maximum of 3 people per team, including the team leader
Elements related to the organising committee and judging panel are not permitted to participate in this competition
