Deputy Tourism Minister Claims Decline in Illegal Levies at Tourist Areas During Eid Holiday

Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa has claimed that the number of illegal levies (pungli) during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period in 2026 has decreased compared to last year.

Without providing specific figures for this year’s pungli or a comparison with the previous year, she stated that the decline is based on her side’s observations.

“We monitored that this year it is much lower than the previous year regarding information on pungli and price increases or hikes in tourist destinations as well as hotels and so on,” said Ni Luh at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday (1/4).

Nevertheless, Ni Luh admitted to receiving several reports related to pungli at tourist destinations. She cited one example in Banten.

In response, Ni Luh said she immediately coordinated with the local government, as destinations in the area fall under the authority of regional heads or local governments.

“For example in Banten, the Governor of Banten has issued regulations in the form of a circular regarding no pungli during this Eid holiday and no irrational price increases during the Eid holiday,” said the former television journalist.

Tourist attractions bustling with visitors

At the same time, Ni Luh reported that several tourist attractions were crowded during the Eid holiday.

The top spot was held by the Malioboro area in Yogyakarta with an estimated 468,004 tourists.

Second, Ancol in North Jakarta with an estimated 343,623 tourists, followed by third place, Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta with an estimated 284,412 visitors.
