Deputy Speaker of DPR: Our Forests Breathe Not Only for Indonesia, but for the World

Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sari Yuliati has emphasised Indonesia’s commitment to developing a high-integrity carbon market as part of global efforts to address the climate crisis. Sari stressed that Indonesia, as one of the world’s largest owners of tropical forests, bears responsibility and has opportunities in the global battle against climate change. “Our forests breathe not only for Indonesia, but also for the world,” said Sari in her statement on Thursday (16/4/2026). This was conveyed in her speech at the World Bank EDS 16 & Embassy of Indonesia High Level Round Table Discussion: High Integrity Carbon Market for Sustainable Development in Washington DC on Tuesday (14/4/2026). The speech was delivered before representatives of governments, academics, partner organisations, certification bodies, and standards organisations. Furthermore, she affirmed that strategic assets in the form of forests, land, and mangroves position Indonesia as a key global carbon storage centre. By measuring the carbon absorption potential from these ecosystems, Indonesia is believed to be able to open up opportunities for green investments worth billions of dollars. Sari also emphasised that the climate crisis is no longer merely an academic issue, but a reality felt directly in various provinces. She assessed that developing nature-based solutions is an important path to maintaining environmental sustainability while supporting the national development agenda. At the end of her speech, Sari encouraged cross-sector collaboration, both from government and international organisations, to ensure that Indonesia’s carbon market operates transparently, credibly, and provides real benefits to society and the world.
