Deputy Speaker of DPR: Labour Protection Bill to be Passed by 8 October at the Latest
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Saan Mustopa, has ensured that the Labour Protection Bill will be passed by 8 October 2026 at the latest. Saan noted that the Bill could potentially be ratified even sooner if a consensus is reached.
“The ratification will certainly be by 8 October at the latest. However, if we find common ground and resolve all issues before October, it could certainly happen faster,” Saan told reporters at the DPR in Jakarta on Tuesday (29/09/2026).
Saan explained that the House is working under time constraints imposed by a Constitutional Court (MK) ruling, which requires the Labour Protection Bill to be passed within the coming month.
“We are limited by this mandate from the Constitutional Court ruling this October. Meanwhile, the DPR’s current session runs until 8 October, and we will not return until November,” he said.
He is striving to ensure the Bill becomes law before the DPR enters its recess period, noting that the current session is scheduled to close on 8 October 2026.
“This means that before the close of the session, we must ratify this to fulfil the mandate of the Constitutional Court ruling,” he added.
Saan also revealed the challenges involved in drafting the Bill, admitting the difficulty in accommodating the competing interests of labourers, employers, and the government.
“Reconciling the interests of these three parties is a complex task for the DPR. However, we must be able to accommodate all sides. The interests of workers must be addressed, while also considering the interests of the business community and the government,” he explained.
“The DPR is certainly doing its best to meet the demands and aspirations of the trade unions,” he concluded.
