Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal inaugurated eight relocation houses for residents affected by a landslide in Arjasari District, Bandung Regency. The houses were constructed through the Rumah Aspirasi Kang Cucun programme in partnership with various stakeholders.

Cucun explained that the relocation house construction began after he received information about a landslide disaster that claimed lives in the area. He subsequently visited the location and met directly with affected families.

“I visited after receiving information about the landslide and that there were fatalities. I came here and met with the families. I promised to relocate and rebuild their homes,” Cucun said, as cited by 20detik on Tuesday (10 March 2026).

Cucun elaborated that the relocation house construction received support from various parties, including his faction colleagues and several businesspeople who helped ease the burden on disaster-affected communities.

“I sought cooperation with my faction friends and businesspeople to share the burden. We purchased the land. So this truly comes entirely from Rumah Aspirasi Kang Cucun, together with friends from the PKB Faction, from the DPR, provincial parliament and district/city parliaments, all working together to rebuild and relocate,” he said.

According to Cucun, the land selected for relocation was carefully chosen to be in a safer location so that residents would no longer live in landslide-prone areas.

“We sought land that is truly safe. We cannot relocate people to land that is even more dangerous. We prepared land that will absolutely not be affected again by disasters like the recent landslide,” he said.

Beyond inaugurating the relocation houses, Cucun also engaged in dialogue with residents and gathered public aspirations. He considered direct meetings with constituents an essential responsibility of elected representatives.

“I have met with constituents from before becoming Deputy Speaker of the DPR until now. Meeting with communities is a daily activity when I return to my electoral district,” he explained.

Cucun noted that direct presence amongst communities was also important for providing moral support to disaster-affected residents.

“I must be able to provide motivation directly to the landslide victims who have lost their children and family members. Hopefully, our presence here can provide them some comfort,” he added.

Cucun also urged local authorities to strengthen disaster mitigation efforts in landslide-prone areas to prevent similar incidents from claiming more lives.

“I want this to be a note for the authorities here to conduct mitigation. Do not wait until a landslide has already occurred and there are casualties before taking action,” he said.

Cucun hopes the house relocation will help residents resume their lives in safer and more comfortable conditions.

“I hope this house relocation can somewhat ease the sorrow of affected families and provide them with safer housing,” he concluded.
