Deputy Social Minister Targets Permanent Sekolah Rakyat in East Lampung to Operate by July
Deputy Minister of Social Affairs Agus Jabo Priyono visited the Integrated People’s School (SRT) 34 in East Lampung and inspected the construction progress of the permanent Sekolah Rakyat (SR) in Sukadana District. Agus Jabo stated that the school is targeted to be operational by July 2026.
During the construction inspection on Thursday (11/6/2026), Agus emphasised that the Sekolah Rakyat programme is designed to open access to education for children from underprivileged families and to break the chain of intergenerational poverty.
“This Sekolah Rakyat is built to break intergenerational poverty. Children must be prioritised so they are not burdened with work at home again. Education must be the path to change their future,” Agus Jabo said in a written statement on Saturday (12/6/2026).
Continuing his directives, Agus Jabo stressed the importance of the roles of schools, parents, and mentors in ensuring children can receive an education. He also reminded of the importance of building students’ character, including the prohibition of bullying, intolerance, and violence within the school environment. According to him, the values of mutual cooperation and mutual respect must become the main culture at Sekolah Rakyat.
Following the visit to SRT 34, Agus Jabo directly reviewed the construction of the permanent Sekolah Rakyat in Sukadana District. During the review, he was accompanied by East Lampung Regent Ela Siti Nuryamah, the Lampung Provincial Social Service, and elements of the construction implementers.
Agus Jabo conveyed that the construction of the permanent SR is currently being accelerated to meet the operational target for the new academic year in mid-July. The government is targeting the facility to be fully functional according to the schedule agreed upon with the relevant ministries.
“The target is that by mid-July it can already accept new students for the new academic year,” he said.
He explained that the permanent SR in East Lampung will accommodate around 270 students in the initial phase, consisting of elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels, each with three study groups. In addition, there are still students from the pioneer school who will remain accommodated.
The government is also formulating an additional scheme to accommodate prospective students who have undergone the assessment process but have not yet been accommodated due to quota limitations.
“We are preparing a scheme so that children who have been assessed but not yet accommodated can still receive educational services. However, everything is awaiting further direction from the President,” he revealed.
One of the students of SRT 34 East Lampung, Devi (16), shared that she was previously unable to attend school on time due to financial constraints. Her family’s economic condition, working as farmers without owning land, forced Devi to postpone continuing her education. She expressed deep gratitude that she can now resume her education through Sekolah Rakyat.
“I was late to school because I had no money. I am happy to be able to go to school here,” Devi concluded.
