Deputy Minister Urges East Java to Collaborate for Milk Self-Sufficiency

Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has urged all parties in East Java to work together to help the government achieve national milk self-sufficiency. “The strategy being built starts from upstream strengthening, and there must be involvement from downstream actors. Without this, the government cannot do it alone because the gap in demand that must be met to achieve self-sufficiency is quite large,” Hanif said after a Coordination Meeting on the National Milk Self-Sufficiency Strategy held in Malang, East Java, on Tuesday. He noted that fresh cow’s milk production in East Java accounts for 57.9 per cent of national production. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), fresh milk production in 2025 reached 820,874 tonnes, with 475,394 tonnes originating from East Java. This makes the province the leading producer of the commodity, followed by West Java, which contributes around 10 per cent. Therefore, he assessed that milk production in East Java must be further maximised to help meet domestic milk needs, which are currently only 20 per cent fulfilled by local production, with the remaining 80 per cent met through imports. He stated that this market share must be fully utilised to absorb domestic milk production to the maximum extent.
