Deputy Minister Urges East Java to Collaborate for Milk Self-Sufficiency

Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has asked all parties in East Java to work together to help the government realise national milk self-sufficiency.

“The strategy must be built starting from the upstream side with strengthening efforts, and there must be involvement from downstream players. Without that, the government cannot manage alone because the gap in demand that must be filled on the road to self-sufficiency is considerable,” said Hanif after a Coordination Meeting on the Strategy for National Milk Self-Sufficiency held in Malang City, East Java, on Tuesday.

Hanif said fresh cow’s milk production in East Java contributes 57.9 per cent of national milk production.

According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), fresh milk production in 2025 stood at 820,874 tonnes, of which 475,394 tonnes came from production in East Java.

That figure places the province as one of the leading producers of the commodity, alongside West Java, which contributes around 10 per cent.

For this reason, Hanif believes fresh cow’s milk production in East Java needs to be maximised continuously so it can help close the domestic milk demand gap, as only 20 per cent of national needs are currently met locally, while the remaining 80 per cent is fulfilled through imports.

He said this market share must be genuinely exploited to absorb domestic milk production to the fullest extent.
