Deputy Minister for Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Wamendiktisaintek) Stella Christie stated that the present moment represents an important opportunity to build Jakarta using an approach grounded in science, research, and innovation.

“It is time for us to build Jakarta with science and technology. That is why we are here, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek), to involve not just ministries, but all actors in science and technology, from lecturers, researchers, students, industry, regional government, central government, to the community,” said Deputy Minister Stella in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Deputy Minister noted that Jakarta’s future development requires the involvement of the entire higher education, science, and technology ecosystem so that the resulting policies have an increasing impact on society.

“Ultimately, all these efforts are returned to the community to make Jakarta a city that grows through science and technology in order to improve the comfort and safety of its citizens,” said Deputy Minister Stella.

Through the Jakarta Urban Knowledge Hub, knowledge and study results from universities and various research institutions can be more closely connected to regional development needs.

She added that Jakarta has great potential to develop as an international talent hub. Based on mapping conducted, the current global geopolitical situation opens opportunities for Indonesia, particularly Jakarta, to become a destination for international students, researchers, and academicians.

“This potential needs to be supported through the strengthening of an integrated higher education, research, and innovation ecosystem between the central government and regional governments,” said Deputy Minister Stella.

Meanwhile, Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung affirmed that the Jakarta Urban Knowledge Hub will be one of the important instruments in supporting Jakarta’s transformation into a modern and competitive global city.

According to him, the utilisation of data, science, and technology will strengthen the quality of development planning in various sectors, from transportation, environment, energy, to transit-oriented area development.

This evidence-based approach also forms the foundation for waste management in Jakarta, including through strengthening the culture of waste sorting from the household level, schools, to the wider community to support a more sustainable waste processing system.
