Deputy Minister Silmy Karim Named Suspect: Wears KPK Vest, Hands in Handcuffs
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named Deputy Minister of Immigration and Penitentiary, Silmy Karim, as a suspect in connection with an operation in West Jakarta regarding the processing of permits for foreign nationals residing in Indonesia.
As observed by CNNIndonesia.com, Silmy was escorted to a detention vehicle after being questioned for approximately 10 hours.
Silmy was seen wearing the KPK’s signature orange vest with his hands in handcuffs.
Silmy chose to remain silent and did not respond to questions from the media.
In addition to Silmy, the KPK also detained the former Acting Director General of Immigration for the 2024-2025 period, Saffar Muhammad Godam, who was also caught in the operation.
Previously, the KPK conducted an operation in West Jakarta on June 2-3, 2026. A total of about a dozen people were arrested as part of the operation.
The KPK had previously revealed that the alleged criminal act committed by Silmy Karim occurred while he was serving as Director General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights for the 2023-2024 period.
Silmy was appointed as Director General of Immigration on January 4, 2023, and his term ended on October 21, 2024, coinciding with his appointment as Deputy Minister of Immigration and Penitentiary.
“Director General of Immigration 2023-2024,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at his office when confirmed about the time frame of the alleged criminal act on Wednesday (June 3) evening.
Budi has not yet been able to provide information regarding the articles that will be used against those caught in the operation in Jakarta, West Java, and Bali on June 2-3, 2026.
“Regarding the construction of the charges, we will wait because tonight there will still be an exposé (case presentation). Whether the charges will be under Article 12e for extortion, bribery, or other forms of acceptance, we will wait and see. We will update you later,” said Budi.
The KPK seized at least four cars, nine motorcycles, and seven bicycles related to the operation involving the Head of the West Jakarta Immigration Office, which were taken to the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (June 3) evening.
All of the evidence was transported to the KPK office with the help of a towing service.
The evidence was stored in the KPK office’s yard. In addition, the KPK also secured foreign currency, namely Singapore dollars and US dollars, as well as gold, from the operation.
