Deputy Minister Says No Need for Special Investigation Team into Shooting of Pregnant Woman in Papua, Police Handling Sufficient

Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto has stated that the case of a pregnant woman who died after being shot in her home in Sugapa, Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua, is being handled comprehensively by the National Police. He noted that there had been consideration of forming an investigation team, but after receiving an explanation from the police regarding the handling of the case, such a team is not currently required. ‘We initially considered whether an investigation team was necessary. However, Astamaops Mr Fadil Imran has explained that the process is being handled thoroughly, so there is no need yet to form an investigation team. It is being handled,’ Mugiyanto said during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday. The Ministry of Human Rights held a coordination meeting to strengthen synergy with the Indonesian Military and the National Police in addressing issues in Papua. The meeting was attended by the National Police’s Assistant Chief for Operations, Commissioner General Fadil Imran, and the Head of the TNI Legal and Human Rights Agency, Rear Admiral Farid Ma’ruf, along with ministry officials. Commissioner General Fadil Imran explained that there is no need to form an additional team because the process of finding the perpetrators of the shooting is already proceeding well. He stated that the police are collaborating with the military on the ground to enforce the law in this case. ‘I think there is no need for an investigation team. The Damai Cartenz Task Force and the Law Enforcement Task Force are already working with high coordination on the ground to find the suspects,’ Fadil said. In addition to the case of the pregnant woman, the police are also handling the shooting of a pastor and the burning of an Associated Mission Aviation plane at Balinggama Airstrip in Yahukimo Regency, which resulted in the death of the American pilot, Nicholas F Goselin.
