Deputy Minister Reveals Diaspora Eligible for Dual Citizenship
The government is currently drafting a bill on Indonesian citizenship that will allow dual citizenship on a limited and special basis, according to Deputy Law Minister Prof. Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej. Speaking at a press conference at the Directorate General of Taxes headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday (14/8/2026), he explained that the provision targets diaspora members deemed capable of contributing to Indonesia. He outlined two categories of diaspora who would be eligible: athletes and other professionals, and those possessing specialised expertise. Eddy, as he is familiarly known, said the latter group includes individuals with specific knowledge intended to support the transformation of technology and knowledge. These provisions will be incorporated into the Citizenship Bill in a restricted and selective manner.
