The government has assured that the handling of the victims will be carried out properly and will not burden the victims’ families.

Surabaya (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana handed over compensation to the families of those who died in the fire aboard KMP Mutiara Sentosa II at Bhayangkara H.S. Samsoeri Mertojoso Hospital in Surabaya on Tuesday.

Suntana said the compensation was a form of the government’s presence for members of the public who fell victim to a public transport accident.

“The government is ensuring that the handling of the victims can be carried out properly and does not burden the victims’ families,” said Suntana in Surabaya on Tuesday.

The assistance provided comprises Rp50 million from PT Jasa Raharja (Persero) and Rp75 million from PT Jasaraharja Putera for each victim who died.

PT Jasa Raharja is covering medical expenses of up to Rp20 million per person, while PT Jasaraharja Putera is providing care compensation of Rp37.5 million for each injured victim.

“It is hoped that this handover of compensation can ease the burden on the victims’ families following the ferry fire that claimed lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, East Java Regional Police Chief Inspector General Nanang Avianto affirmed that his personnel would continue to provide full support in handling the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II disaster, from securing the location and the evacuation process, to cross-agency coordination and assistance for victims and their families.

He added that East Java Regional Police personnel remain on standby to support the victim identification process, information services for families, security at the port area, and further coordination with relevant agencies so that every stage of victim handling proceeds quickly, accurately and humanely.

During the visit, the delegation of the Deputy Minister and the East Java Regional Police Chief also visited victims still receiving medical treatment at PHC Port Hospital in Tanjung Perak, Surabaya, to ensure that medical care is proceeding optimally.
