Deputy Minister of P2MI and Ministry of Law Discuss Strengthening Protection for Migrant Workers
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Christina Aryani and Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej discussed strengthening cooperation in providing legal protection for Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) and their families. “This meeting is a follow-up to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that has already been established, particularly to expand access to legal aid for migrant workers and their families,” said Christina in a press release from the Ministry of P2MI in Jakarta on Monday. She emphasised the importance of synergy with the Ministry of Law to optimise the legal aid posts (Posbanhum) that have been established in 80,298 villages and sub-districts across Indonesia. According to her, the Ministry of P2MI will incorporate “Safe Migrant” material into every legal socialisation at Posbanhum to equip prospective PMI to be safe and protected from before departure until their return to the homeland. In addition to access to legal aid, the two also discussed issues related to the status of children of PMI born abroad, including those at risk of being stateless. “This issue requires serious handling, especially for children who are neglected or lack documents. We will continue to coordinate to ensure their rights remain protected,” she said.
