Deputy Minister of Law stresses Pancasila must not remain a theory on paper
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej stressed that Pancasila, particularly the principle of just and civilized humanity, must not remain a theory on paper but be applied in daily life.
“The concept of justice and civility in Pancasila must not stagnate as a theory on paper; it must be contextualised into tangible daily actions,” said Eddy Hiariej, his familiar name, during an online event in Jakarta on Friday night.
The statement was made by the Deputy Minister at the international webinar “Weaving Diversity: Pancasila Values as the Soul of National Unity”, part of a cross-cultural religious literacy series to commemorate Pancasila’s Anniversary.
During his keynote speech, the Deputy Minister emphasised the importance of strengthening social trust and human dignity as the global order faces a values crisis.
According to the 2021 report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the normalisation of violence, inequality, and loss of respect for fellow humans poses a threat to societal survival.
He described social trust as an “invisible glue” that fosters law enforcement and cross-element harmony.
“However, this trust will not grow in barren soil; it can only take root in sincere recognition of human dignity—a recognition that every individual possesses intrinsic value that must be respected regardless of race, ethnicity, social status, or religion,” he said.
It is at this level, he added, where the uniqueness and brilliance of Indonesia’s founding fathers in formulating Pancasila lies.
He stated that Pancasila serves as a “golden bridge” connecting human dignity and social trust.
The Deputy Minister further stressed that weaving diversity is an ongoing process that must not cease.
“Pancasila is our shared home. Let us safeguard its foundation through mutual trust and nurture its roof by continuously respecting the dignity of fellow humans,” Eddy said.
The international webinar was organised by the Ministry of Law’s Human Resource Development Agency and Institut Leimena to mark Pancasila’s Anniversary, observed annually on 1 June.
Executive Director of Institut Leimena, Matius Ho, noted that social cohesion is increasingly discussed in international forums amid rising xenophobia and hatred towards those perceived as different.
