Deputy Minister of Human Rights emphasises state-private sector collaboration to fulfil rights of persons with disabilities
In addition to the state, the private sector also bears responsibility for human rights, including for persons with intellectual disabilities. Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto emphasised that fulfilling the rights of persons with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual disabilities, requires collaboration between the state and the private sector to strengthen the inclusive ecosystem in Indonesia. According to Mugiyanto, the responsibility for fulfilling human rights cannot be entirely shouldered by the government but also involves the active role of the business world. “In addition to the state, the private sector is also responsible for human rights, including for persons with intellectual disabilities,” said Mugiyanto when receiving the central board of Special Olympics Indonesia (SOIna), in his statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. “It is their right to receive equal respect, both from the state and the private sector,” he added. Mugiyanto explained that efforts to protect and fulfil the rights of persons with disabilities have a strong legal foundation through the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities via Law Number 19 of 2011. He added that the government has also established the National Disability Commission as an independent institution tasked with monitoring, evaluating, and advocating for the respect, protection, and fulfilment of the rights of persons with disabilities. In that context, access to sports, personal development, and full participation in social life become important aspects that must be guaranteed. General Chairman of PP SOIna Warsito Ellwein stated that space for activities for persons with intellectual disabilities remains limited, making the role of organisations like SOIna crucial. SOIna, as a non-profit organisation accredited by Special Olympics International, has been organising sports training and competitions for persons with intellectual disabilities in Indonesia. In the near future, SOIna will hold the Indonesian Special Olympics Week (PESONAS) II in 2026 in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara, from 13 to 18 October 2026. The event will also serve as part of the athlete selection process for the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2027 in Santiago, Chile, with a quota of 67 athletes. The government hopes for cross-sectoral support, including from the private sector, to expand access and strengthen the sustainable fulfilment of the rights of persons with disabilities.
