Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Prepares Repatriation of Refugees from Tribal Clashes in Jayawijaya
The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Ribka Haluk, has ensured that the central government, alongside local governments, has taken over the management of refugees currently sheltered at the Jayawijaya Police Headquarters in the Papua Highlands. These individuals fled to the location due to tribal conflicts that have resulted in casualties.
Speaking after inspecting the refugee site, Ribka explained that the handling of the situation is being conducted in collaboration with the Papua Highlands Provincial Government, district governments, security forces, and various parties that have been assisting the community on the ground since the onset of the conflict.
“The needs of the refugees, such as food, resting areas, healthcare services, and even transportation for the repatriation of citizens, have been prepared by the government,” Ribka stated in a press release on Monday (18/05/2026).
Ribka noted that local governments and police forces are continuously conducting data collection and managing the requirements of residents still residing in the displacement sites. Government teams have been placed on standby to assist with further-stage management, which includes the process of returning citizens to their respective homes.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister urged the public to remain calm and resume their daily activities as usual. She also requested that anyone in need of assistance or security to coordinate immediately with officers on the ground.
“Regarding food, drink, bedding, and other equipment, as well as transportation for those returning or those who are ill and require facilitation, everything has been organised by the government,” she added.
Ribka also expressed her condolences to the families and communities affected by the tragedy. She expressed hope that the community could return to their activities safely and that conditions in the region would gradually return to normal. She extended her gratitude to the Papua Highlands Provincial Government, regents, church authorities, community leaders, and all parties involved in the rapid response to the affected population.
Previously, tribal warfare broke out in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Highlands, which reportedly resulted in fatalities. The clashes allegedly involved the Pirime (Lanny) and Kurima (Woma) tribes using sharp weapons and arrows. The conflict initially erupted in the Woma District on Thursday (14/05) before spreading to several other locations across Jayawijaya.
