Deputy Minister of Environment: Waste Management Improving, Enforcement to Decrease
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Environment, Diaz Hendropriyono, has called on regional governments to support the improvement of national waste management performance, which will help reduce enforcement actions related to waste management violations.
“All waste management figures must increase, including the number of TPS3R facilities, TPST facilities, and RDF production. However, one figure must decrease, namely the number of cases (of violations in the waste management sector), so that it can show that the management is already good,” said Deputy Minister of Environment/Deputy Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Diaz, during the second day of the 2026 National Coordination Meeting on Waste Management in Jakarta, Thursday.
According to Diaz, the waste problem has become a crucial issue that can no longer be postponed, requiring cross-sectoral collaboration and the active participation of all elements of society. These efforts should not only focus on downstream management but also be strengthened from the upstream side, in accordance with applicable provisions and regulations.
He reminded that there are authorities and obligations for provinces and regencies/cities, in accordance with Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry/BPLH will continue to carry out its role as the second line of defense after regional governments, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
“It should also be emphasized that waste is a complex problem. This means that, in accordance with the applicable laws, Law Number 32 of 2009 and Law Number 18 of 2008, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry/BPLH can act as the second line of enforcement, when, for example, the governor does not take action against regencies/cities,” explained Diaz.
On this occasion, the Deputy Minister also expressed his appreciation to the regions that have shown good performance in waste management and have successfully received awards from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry/BPLH on the first day of the National Coordination Meeting on Wednesday (February 25).
Previously, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry/BPLH awarded the “Towards Clean Regency/City” Certificate to 35 regions, with the best rankings awarded to the cities of Surabaya and Balikpapan, and the Ciamis Regency.
