Deputy Minister of Digital Communication urges inclusion of ethical perspective in AI development

Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister (Wamen) of Digital Communication (Komdigi), Nezar Patria, has urged various parties to include an ethical perspective in the development and utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology or artificial intelligence.

Speaking in Yogyakarta on Friday, Deputy Minister Nezar said that incidents of misuse of AI, such as editing other people’s photos, may occur when using artificial intelligence technology without ethical guidance.

The Deputy Minister of Komdigi stated that the Indonesian Government is currently preparing an AI document to complement the national AI roadmap, which is expected to become a Presidential Regulation and be established in the near future.

“So, we indeed hope that AI development considers the ethical side, which we call ethics by design,” said the Deputy Minister.

In this way, he said, when it is already designed, ethical elements in AI have been considered, including whether it is appropriate or permissible to produce controversial content.

“For example, content containing religious sentiments or sentiments with pornographic elements. Because we see how easy it is to use the application, then generative AI can create images containing pornographic elements,” he said.

Komdigi hopes that artificial intelligence technology developers can be aware or attentive to these issues and implement a technological solution.

“We are not restricting innovation, but when a product is released into society, ethical elements must be considered,” he said.
