Deputy Minister: Internet Rakyat solution for bridging digital divide
Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Nezar Patria stated that a 100 Mbps internet service priced at Rp100,000 per month could mark a turning point for national digital access equity while addressing citizens’ internet cost concerns.
He noted Indonesia still faces significant challenges in internet service quality despite coverage reaching most populated areas.
“Our telecommunications network already covers 97% of inhabited areas in Nusantara. While the landscape is adequate, internet quality still needs improvement,” Nezar said at the Internet Rakyat launch event in West Jakarta on Tuesday.
Nezar added that current challenges are no longer just about expanding network coverage but also service quality and affordability for the public.
The government deems high-speed, stable internet access increasingly urgent as digital transformation accelerates across sectors including education, public services, healthcare, and the digital economy.
Nezar stressed that high-speed, affordable internet services can expand public access to productive digital spaces.
He described initiatives like Internet Rakyat as crucial steps to bridge existing digital divides across regions.
“If we can provide 100 Mbps internet for Rp100,000, it will be a game-changer. It’s not just about connectivity, but ensuring equitable digital access for all,” he emphasised.
According to Nezar, digital transformation requires inclusive infrastructure to ensure equitable benefits from the digital economy.
“We want digital access to be more inclusive. No one should be left behind due to inability to access quality internet,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, industry players, telecom providers, and stakeholders to accelerate national connectivity equity.
He noted Indonesia’s geographical challenges demand innovative approaches for wider, efficient internet coverage.
Beyond expanding access, the Ministry of Communications and Digital continues pushing to improve national network quality to support future technologies like artificial intelligence, cloud services, the Internet of Things, and national digital economy development.
“Future bandwidth demands will grow significantly. Therefore, internet quality and affordability must go hand in hand,” Deputy Minister Nezar said.
Through government-industry collaboration, Nezar hopes affordable high-speed internet will open new opportunities for digital education, business expansion, and bolstering Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
