Deputy Minister Hanif Denies Suwung Landfill Will Be Converted into Golf Course

The Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has denied claims that the Suwung Final Disposal Site (TPA) will be transformed into a golf course or similar facility. He made these remarks during a working visit to SDN 5 Pedungan, Denpasar, on Thursday (10/09/2026).

“There have certainly been many jibes, many demonstrations, many negative perceptions, and many incorrect assumptions, but in the end, you can see for yourselves that nothing is being hidden from us; there is no plan to turn Suwung into a golf course or anything of that nature,” said Hanif, who served as the Minister of Environment when the Suwung landfill was initially closed.

Hanif stated that the objective of closing the Suwung landfill is to ensure better waste handling and management. Furthermore, the move aims to train and change public behaviour regarding waste disposal.

Hanif also noted that he has received reports from the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, indicating that waste shipments from Denpasar to the Suwung landfill have decreased by 70 per cent. He credited waste bank programmes, such as the one at SDN 5 Pedungan, for reducing the volume of waste sent to the site.

“As a result, no more fresh waste will enter Suwung. Only residue will be sent to Suwung in the future. For organic waste, God willing, it has been resolved at the source. Meanwhile, inorganic waste has been reduced through various various efforts,” Hanif added.

Hanif expressed hope that the waste management efforts undertaken by the Denpasar City Government and the Badung Regency Government could lead to the Adipura award from the Ministry of Environment.

“Last year, we were somewhat lagging because the total waste reform process, which was previously unaddressed, is being finalised today,” he concluded.
