Deputy Interior Minister (Wamendagri) Akhmad Wiyagus has emphasised that Kendari City possesses substantial opportunities to develop into a centre for economic growth as well as a hub for the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry in eastern Indonesia.

He made these remarks while serving as the inspecting officer at the ceremony commemorating the 195th anniversary of Kendari City at the City Hall Ceremony Field in Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra) on Saturday, 9 May 2026.

In his address, Wiyagus expressed appreciation to the local government apparatus, community leaders, academics, and all societal elements that have contributed to Kendari’s progress as it reaches its 195th year.

According to him, the spirit of collaboration and active participation from all parties serves as the main pillar in strengthening responsive, transparent, and accountable local governance.

He assessed that this year’s Kendari anniversary celebration is particularly special as it coincides with the hosting of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) ASPAC 2026. In his view, this positions Kendari not merely as the capital of Sultra but also as a centre of attention in the Asia-Pacific region for local governance.

Wiyagus stated that the international community’s trust in selecting Kendari as the host for this global forum represents recognition of the city’s capacity, deemed on par with major world cities. This demonstrates that Kendari’s development is on the right track, aligning infrastructure development with local cultural strengths.

“A modern city that still preserves its cultural roots. An economically ambitious city that remains socially inclusive,” said Wiyagus.

On the other hand, he applauded Kendari’s development achievements amid global economic dynamics. The city has recorded economic growth of 5.16%, surpassing the national growth rate. Moreover, price stability has been maintained through the performance of the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID), with an inflation rate of 2.96%.

In his opinion, the most proud achievement is the Human Development Index (HDI) of 86.36, placing Kendari sixth nationally. This figure indicates that government investments in health, education, and income enhancement have been felt tangibly by the community.
